Schwinn Cyclelock Replacement

How many of you out there have a bike with a busted key or non-original key and would like to
replace it. My original prewar DX had a non-original key and it drove me nuts. So, I experimented
and was able to replace it with a new barrell and original key. Most sketches or diagrams on the
Internet are difficult to follow, so I decided to make a page that will have you changing your lock
in no time.

First take the fork off of the bicycle so you can get underneith were the welch (dust) cap is.

Now you must remove the dust cap. You are going to have to punch or drill through it. Be careful not
to damage the lock mech. when doing this. Drill towards the rear of the cap.

Make a big enough hole to get a large screwdriver in and then pry up the dustcap.

Clean out the grease so you can see the lock mechanism, specifcally the clip that holds the barrell in.
This is were most people get confused. In order to see the clip you must turn the key to the locked
position. The clip doesn't actually come off, it just springs up and down about an eighth of an inch. The
arrows point to the clip.

Push in the clip with a screwdriver, it should spring up and down. Now, turn the key slightly back to
the unlock position. Not too much though, the clip must still be visible and accessible. You do this
because you actually use the key to pull out the barrell. If the key is in the full lock position the key will
just come out, not the barrell. By turning it back the key will grab the barrell when pulling it out.
Now, push in the clip and pull on the key. The barrell should just slide out.

Now, put in the new barrell the exact opposite as you took the old one out. Make sure the end of the
barrell attachs to the locking lever. If you want to put the dust cap back on, go ahead. I put it on despite
the ugly drill hole so the lock mechanism is protected.
